Pig Beach at Big Majors - 30 Mar

The big tourist draw at Big Majors is
the swimming pigs. When we cruised here 10 years ago it was mostly  cruisers that would dinghy over to the beach and feed the pigs that live on the island. The pigs had quickly learned to swim out to the dinghies for their treats.

Now the charter companies have learned the pigs are a tourist draw and they advertise on the internet and motor down from Nassau bringing vacationers to the Exumas.

Rivah was quite interested in the strange animals swimming nearby. We kept our distance to ensure she stayed in the boat and avoid the pigs getting too close. We have seem them bite people and even their rubber dinghies when going for food.

The more adventurous pigs still swim out to the boats for handouts.

Used to be they were swimming out to cruiser's dinghies. Now they swim out to the 60ft+ multi-million dollar yachts filling the anchorage.

Pigs are not the only animals swimming around the Big Majors anchorage. We saw this shark most every day while anchored here as he cruised around the shore and the anchored boats looking for his next meal. This is actually a nurse shark that feeds mainly on shellfish. We watched the boat in front of us clean two large lobsters and throw the carcasses overboard, which is what draws the sharks to the anchored boats.

Braving the shark-infested waters, Sue decided she had to go swimming at least once during our Bahamas cruise. I stood shark watch (with my camera) but none appeared.

Another day finishes up in paradise. Same sailboat anchored behind us in front of the setting sun.
